Tolleson's Grand Opening of West Point High School

Located just west of downtown Phoenix - Tolleson, Arizona has transitioned from a City focused on agriculture to a thriving hub for large commercial and industrial companies. Accompanying this growth, came the need for quality education and Tolleson Elementary and Union High School (TUHSD) Districts responded. Eight schools, amongst five partner elementary school districts, were funneling into surrounding High Schools requiring the district to move quick and diligently on the development of a new, centralized, 3,000 student high school.

In January 2018, the TUHSD Governing Board, awarded the architecture/engineering contract to ADM Group, with Energy Systems Design, Inc. (ESD) as their teaming partner, to design the seventh high school, West Point High. With an extremely tight schedule (construction of phase I to be completed by July 29, 2019) our team was up for the challenge! 

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony for phase I, students, educators, trade partners, and community leaders, gathered to celebrate the facility (constructed by Chasse Building team) and witness the intricate features throughout the campus. The Media Center provide a flexible work space complete with underfloor carpet power distribution.  Lighting layout and design compliments the architecture and the state of art video screen is located for everyone to have a great view.  The Gymnasium building provides an amazing entry, highlighting the mascot and color changing LED that prepares you for the “awesomeness” that awaits as you enter the gym.  Aesthetically speaking, the naked eye gravitates to the SolaTube, which are spaced throughout the gymnasium allowing daylight to enter the space evenly and reducing energy cost.  Chilled water roof top air handling units provide cooling to these spaces with the ability to go into full economizer mode bringing in 100% outside air when the weather permits, which helps the district save money.

What lies beneath the “bones” of the campus are the systems that provide for seamless, comfortable, and intuitive learning. The electrical designs include an innovative Building Management System (BMS) that monitors occupancy, daylighting, Bluetooth asset tracking, temperature, space co2, and energy monitoring functions in efforts to assure granular occupancy status and eliminate costly material and labor cost by wirelessly communicating to onboard sensors and wireless keypads. The ability to activate BACNET over IP communication, API integration, Bluetooth real time location tracking and space utilization is activated and is viewed through the web browser.  This system creates geo-fencing to wall off areas of concern and user alerts and also monitors branch circuit metering to delineate lighting, mechanical and receptacle loads. Innovation stations are located in the media center for student observation of power consumption for specific building as well as comparing multiple buildings. Additionally, a thread system was designed throughout the campus for flexibility and reconfiguration of power distribution with minimal downtime.  

Occupant (educator/student) comfort is exceeded by the design of individual temperature and co2 controls and variable speed supply air fan coil units and variable speed outside air supply fans to each classroom. The system responds to cooling requirements and outside air requirements by monitoring occupancy, temperature and co2. When the space is satisfied, energy consumption is reduced by decreasing the fan speed of the fan coil unit and closing the chilled water valve. Inline supply fans also vary the outside air to the space depending on occupancy.  In turn, energy reduction occurs by the decrease in outside air throughout the day when the spaces are less occupied.

Not only did we conquer the tight schedule milestones but, we generated innovative, state of the art MEP systems all while keeping our primary focus on the creation of an inspiring, first-of its kind, educational environment to serve the surrounding communities.

West Point High School in partnership with Luke Air Force Base, will focus on a rigorous STEAM- (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) curriculum fou­ndation and a Leadership Academy that will allow students to apply their classroom learning in real world environments and challenge themselves through community involvement.

The total cost for building the brand new, state-of-the-art school was roughly $106 million, and is planning on openings its doors to freshmen and sophomores for the start of the 2019 school year. ESD provided the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing designs for the 300,000 SF school, as well as LEED® services for the eco-friendly district.
